Dental Implants are the newest and most permanent way to replace missing teeth. Implants are basically artificial teeth roots that are surgically placed into the jaw bone. While implant shapes may vary, they are usually a screw-type design.

Dental Implants . General facts

Dental implants are the newest and most permanent tooth replacement option available today. Dental implants can be used in many ways. A single dental implant to replace one tooth. Several dental implants to replace several teeth. Dental implants can also retain or support dentures. Two to 4 dental implants can keep a denture in place. And 6 or more dental implants can keep a bridge in place where there were no teeth before . Dental implants have been around for over 30 years in Europe and about 15 years in the west. Dental implants come in many forms. Subperiostial dental implants. Blade form dental implants. Ramus frame dental implants. Root form dental implants . Root form dental implants can then be divided to many more types Cylinder dental implants. Bascket dental implants. Screw type dental implants. The dental implant can have different surface coatings. HA covered dental implants. Acid etched dental implants. Blasted surface dental implants. Beaded surface dental implants. Dental Implants that are root form can also be converging. Dental implants also come in many different sizes. Now dental implants come in many different lengths and widths. Dental implants are manufactured all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of dental implants have been placed in peoples mouths and have been successful. Dental implants keep the bones from shrinking. Many dental implants have been placed in the last 10 years due to the North American adaptation of this product. There is a lot of questions still about dental implants in the general population. As more and more people have had dental implants placed in their mouths then more people are becoming aware of the benefits of dental implants. There is more research on dental implants than any other dental treatment. However only about 5% of dentists actually practice with dental implants as a vital part of their practice. This is because dental implants are still a relatively new dental procedure .

Dental implants success rate.

If someone is going to have dental implant treatment, the person should check the experience of the dentist that is placing the dental implants as well as restoring the dental implants. Dental implants are very technique sensitive. That means that the dental implant or dental implants may fail due to the sensitivity to the procedure. A rule of thumb is. If the dentist placing the dental implants does so on a routine basis (a few dental implants a week) then chances are that these dental implants have a greater chance of being successful than if these dental implants were placed by someone who only places a few a year. Dental implants have a 95% on average success rate . This means that of all the dental implants placed 5% of these dental implants will need to be removed. Most dental implants are lost due to the body rejecting the dental implants. The body sees the dental implants as a foreign object. The dental implants are like a bacteria to the body and the body tries to get rid of it . Dental implants are made of titanium metal which is the most accepted metal in the human body. Most people do not reject the dental implants. That is another reason we wait before putting the prosthesis on top of the dental implants for about 4 to 6 months. If the dental implants are not rejected in the first 6 months, then chances are that the dental implants will not be rejected ever again. Another reason that dental implants may fail is due to overload. If not enough dental implants are placed in the mouth to support whatever is on top of these dental implants then they will be stressed too much and overloaded. Overloaded dental implants will fail after a few years. If the prosthesis is not sitting correctly on the dental implants then they may overload a particular implant and it is this dental implant that is lost first. Then even more pressure is placed on the remaining dental implants causing these dental implants to fail even more rapidly. Another reason a dental implant can fail is when the person has a disease that directly affects the bone that supports the dental implants.

So if the dental implants are placed by someone who places dental implants all the time.and there are enough dental implants placed to support the superstructure and the superstructure on top of the dental implants is made correctly and the the patient has not rejected the dental implants in the first 6 months, then chances are that these dental implants will be lasting the patient a lifetime. Dental implants cannot get a cavity. Dental implants are rarely broken (there are dental implants now that are alloys of titanium which are much stronger than the original dental implants from Sweden) Dental implants are covered with porcelain and unlikely to wear out. One must however keep the dental implants clean so that the patient does not get gum inflammation around the dental implants. Although some researchers believe that even if the dental implants have inflammation around them they still will not loose bone like regular teeth. There are others however that believe that dental implants can be lost the same way teeth are to periodontitis to Peroimplantitis . Therefore we see the dental implants as "your third set of teeth". Take care of them and the dental implants can last a lifetime. Do not take care of them and the dental implants can be lost the same as the permanent teeth were lost before. Of course dental implants can also be lost due to trauma. However dental implants are extremely difficult to be lost due to trauma. Even harder than natural teeth.
